Towards the end of August, the 1st Football team squad and U11A team squad travelled to Breda in Holland for four days to play against two clubs in their pre-season football trip.
After the previous days travel the boys were keen to get started on the Wednesday morning and so training commenced. Training went well and preparations were made for the evening matches that lay ahead. After lunch back at the hotel the boys ventured out in to Breda itself to take in the sights and to do a bit of shopping too.
The matches in the evening against Utieste 30 were very close affairs. There was plenty of skill and physicality shown from all teams. The U11’s went down by 3-4, with goals coming from Ruairi Taylor and Victor Lyashenko. The seniors also had a superb game and were unlucky to lose by 2-3, goals coming from Joshua Bellamy and Ben Bagshaw.
The next day the boys trained hard in the morning and then had some down time in the afternoon by having a look at the town of Etten-Leur. The evening matches were against Rossendahl. The U11’s started sluggishly and found themselves a goal down early, however if it wasn’t for George Hennessey in goal they would have been even further behind. They slowly got themselves back in the game through Ruairi Taylor. However as the game wore on Rossendahl showed their skill and strength and ran out 3-6 winners. It was however, a great effort from the SHS boys. The seniors also found themselves against a very strong team, but started well and went ahead through two goals from Joshua Bellamy. Max Iannotti added a third from the penalty spot. Rossendahl had only not scored through some desperate defending and great goalkeeping. The second half was fabulous to watch with Rossendahl pushing hard and SHS defending and then trying to break quickly. Rossendahl produced a wonderful team goal to open their account, which was full of superb skill and pace. SHS tried to hang on, but two late goals meant the game finished a deservedly 3-3 draw.
It was a great experience for all the boys to play against such good, skilful opposition. The boys should be commended for their performances and be congratulated for being such good ambassadors on and off of the field.
