Changing face of the UK High Street

Year 8 boys spent a few hours in Kingston town centre last week to collect fieldwork data on the changing face of the UK High street. They were given the task of recording the current land use of 50 shop units to allow comparison with data from 2010.

They also counted pedestrians and shopping bags, which proved quite a task given how suprisingly busy the High Street was on a Friday morning.  The boys also asked questionnaires and got an insight into people’s shopping habits on the high street and online.

The weather was perfect and the sun shone all morning as ordered. In the coming weeks they will be analysing their findings and produce structured fieldwork reports to outline their findings. This work is worth 20% of the Common Entrance mark in Geography and the boys will be learning some key skills as a foundation to their future studies.
