Ecology Field Trip

Year 8 boys walked to a local nature reserve as part of their Science ecology topic where they were able to put their learning from the classroom into practice.

The boys looked at different ways that an area can be sampled, using quadrats and transects to find the biodiversity and abundance of different species. Identifying the different flora proved quite a challenge, as even the slightest variations meant that a new species was observed.

This is part of their Common Entrance and Scholarship syllabus where boys will be able to use their primary data to make suggestions as to why certain species are more abundant than others or the impact humans, roads or developments have on an ecosystem.
