Thursday evening’s Music Soirée was an outstanding showcase of musical performance from our most experienced ensembles and soloists from our upper year groups. We were also delighted to be joined by Mr Woodcock, the Director of Music at Harrow and Mr Foster, the Head of Outreach at Rugby School and Mr White, the Director of Performing Arts at St John’s Leatherhead.
The event opened with a performance of the Rondeau from Purcell’s ‘Abdelazer’, performed by a chamber orchestra comprising of experienced boys who are learning orchestra instruments. The performance was enhanced by the addition of our recently restored timpani drums. There were further ensemble performances from SHS Voices (who looked particularly smart in their recently cleaned choir robes), the Senior Band, String Ensemble, Woodwind Ensemble and Jazz One.
In between the ensemble items, the audience were treated to solos from a number of boys in Years 7 and Year 8. Their confident and assured performances represented years of committed practise over the course of their time at Shrewsbury House. For those boys who are leaving at the end of this term, we are sure their Senior Schools will greatly benefit from the musical abilities that they have honed during their time here. Our congratulations to Sacha B (voice), Max S (voice), Magnus H (violin), Barney M (violin), Avik G (violin), Alex C (saxophone), Hugo J (piano) and Arthur T (electric guitar).
