Rowing Regatta

Much excitement was in evidence on the way to Walton Rowing Club (WRC) as the boys mentally prepared for the first regatta of the year. Hosted by Cranmore School and involving boys from Cranmore, SHS, Danes Hill and the Duke of Kent schools, it was certainly an event that was eagerly anticipated.

The boys raced a short course (in a heavy flow) in coxed quads (sculling). The course was set for around 500 m, but with the fast flow and relatively inexperienced rowers the boys raced a somewhat shorter race! Much was learned in the early exchanges about the importance of coxing (steering!) and remaining relaxed even in the heart of the race.

A great deal of progress was made over the latter races and it was wonderful to put together ‘mixed’ crews containing boys from three of the four schools.

Our thanks to Cranmore School, Walton Rowing Club and the volunteer parents who helped keep everyone warm with sausage rolls and hot chocolate! Well done to all involved.
