Sport at Shrewsbury House School is an integral and vital part of school life. We provide a programme based on inclusivity, enjoyment and performance. Although we are proud of our success in Regional and National competition, Shrewsbury House School is just as focused on providing as broad an opportunity as possible for all boys.

This is extended to representing the School in competition and we aim to ensure that every boy experiences the enjoyment and pride of representing his School in friendly competition in each of the core sports, (football, rugby and cricket). Shrewsbury House School Sport aims to inspire, educate and develop every boy to achieve high standards and enjoyment through sport and physical education. Our Core Values are Teamwork, Enjoyment, Sportsmanship and Hard Work, and our vision is to engender a long-term enthusiasm for sport and physical activity in every pupil. We strive to be respected as a progressive and innovative department at the forefront of Prep School sport.

Although much focus and energy is directed towards the delivery of the core sports of Football, Rugby and Cricket, the boys are offered the opportunity of a much broader programme. Other sports and activities on offer include Swimming, Rowing, Hockey, Triathlon, Shooting, Athletics, Tennis, Golf, Basketball, Table Tennis, Badminton, Cross-Country, Skiing and Judo.

The boys at Shrewsbury House School enjoy wonderful facilities based at the main School site on Ditton Road, and at our dedicated sports ground at Almshouse Lane. We have an indoor/outdoor covered swimming pool, three senior grass pitches, a state-of-the-art International Rugby Board certified All-Weather Surface, further sand-based all-weather surfaces, an indoor Sports Hall, a hard-standing play area, indoor and outdoor cricket nets and a dedicated athletics jump area.

We also encourage and engender links with external community sports organisations and support local schools in the provision of sport. Major and Minor Scholarships, Awards and Exhibitions to senior schools have also been awarded in Sport by: Cranleigh School, Epsom College, Hampton School, King’s College School, Reed’s School, St John’s School, Tonbridge School, Brighton College and Wellington College. Each year all pupils are afforded the chance to join pre-season sports camps at Shrewsbury House School for cricket, football and rugby. In addition, we present annual and bi-annual overseas sporting trips for our senior boys: Spain (football), South Africa (rugby) and St Lucia (cricket).

The team of staff charged with developing the boys’ learning, understanding and enjoyment of all sport, is dedicated and highly qualified. We have a large Department committed to the delivery of Sport and PE and among its members are staff with Football Association, Rugby Football Union, Amateur Swimming Association and English Cricket Board coaching qualifications, as well as experience of playing sport at the highest level. This combination of experience, training and natural motivation within the team ensures that the boys at Shrewsbury House School receive the very best support.

We believe in the value of hard work, in the individuality of each boy and in the inherent values that can be developed and underpinned by involvement in team and individual sports. The success of our programme is not purely seen in results, but rather in enjoyment, sportsmanship, self-confidence and in the achievements of boys in other walks of school and personal life. The opportunity for all boys to participate in our Sport and PE programme, to develop individual skills and to compete for the School in team and individual sport, is actively encouraged.
