Sports

Sport at Shrewsbury House School is an integral and vital part of school life. We provide a programme based on inclusivity, enjoyment and performance. Although we are proud of our success in regional and national competition, Shrewsbury House School is just as focused on providing as broad an opportunity as possible for all boys.

This extends to representing SHS and we aim to ensure that every boy experiences the enjoyment and pride of representing his School in each of the core sports, (football, rugby and cricket). Shrewsbury House School Sport inspires, educates and develops every boy to achieve high standards and enjoyment through sport and physical education. Our delivery is led by our core school values of Respect, Integrity, Perseverance, Compassion and Aspiration. We are respected as a progressive and innovative department at the forefront of Prep School sport.

Plenty of sport, delivered by an inspirational and enthusiastic team. ‘So many opportunities: it is inclusive and equitable’. The ethos encourages sportsmanship and hospitality as a key component.

Good Schools Guide

Although much focus and energy is directed towards the delivery of the core sports of Football, Rugby and Cricket, the boys are offered the opportunity of a much broader programme. Other sports and activities on offer include Swimming, Rowing, Hockey, Shooting, Athletics, Tennis, Golf, Basketball, Table Tennis, Badminton, Cross-Country, Skiing and Karate.

The boys at Shrewsbury House School enjoy wonderful facilities based at the main School site on Ditton Road, and at our dedicated sports ground in Chessington. We have an indoor/outdoor covered swimming pool, three senior grass pitches, a state-of-the-art International Rugby Board certified All-Weather Surface, further sand-based all-weather surfaces, an indoor Sports Hall, a hard-standing play area, indoor and outdoor cricket nets and a dedicated athletics jump area.

We also encourage and engender links with external community sports organisations and support local schools in the provision of sport. Major and Minor Scholarships, Awards and Exhibitions to senior schools have also been awarded in Sport by: Cranleigh School, Epsom College, Hampton School, King’s College School, Reed’s School, St John’s School, Tonbridge School, Brighton College and Wellington College. Overseas trips also enhance opportunities for the boys, including the annual ski trip as well as tours to St Lucia and Sri Lanka.

The team of staff charged with developing the boys’ learning, understanding and enjoyment of all sport is dedicated and highly qualified; among its members are staff with Football Association, Rugby Football Union, Amateur Swimming Association and English Cricket Board coaching qualifications, as well as experience of playing sport at the highest level. This combination of experience, training and natural motivation within the team ensures that the boys at Shrewsbury House School receive the very best support.
